Eberhard & Co. 'Pre Extra Fort' Chronograph

$5,000.00

Eberhard & Co. is a manufacturer whose name is synonymous with high quality chronographs. Look no further than this 40mm steel ‘Pre Extra Fort’ to see why they’ve earned their reputation. This example is powered by Eberhard’s historic Caliber 16000 column wheel chronograph movement. This caliber is a modified Valjoux 65. The top olive style pusher acts as a monopusher that allows you to stop, start and reset the chronograph. The bottom pusher however is no pusher at all. It is in fact a slide switch that allows the user to pause the chronograph without having to fully reset; an endlessly applicable feature that was the bleeding edge of watchmaking technology in 1935 when Eberhard rolled out the 16000. ‘Pre Extra Fort’ is a nickname bestowed by Italian collectors upon the cal. 16000 powered chronographs Eberhard produced in the 30’s and 40’s before their infamous ‘Extra Fort’ model.

This example dates to the 1940s and sports a gorgeous, unpolished 40mm case with military style fixed bars. The blued steel hands pop off the silver dial which features some patina to the tachymetre track giving the dial two-tone appeal. The watch just received a full service and is keeping good time; the chronograph operates as it should. This model is a rare opportunity to own a historic vintage chronograph produced in a modern, wearable size.
